- Dame Slap - Upholders of traditionI picked up this book, really not expecting much. I remember hoping it would not be a scornful report on the caste system. But I was in for a pleasant surprise.
Ms.Vishwanathan, has written a wonderful and interesting book about the South Indian Brahmin. She has drawn characters who are all very real and believable, endearing and annoying in their own way.
The heart of this novel beats strong with the very resilient, likable and responsible Sivakami. And we cry and laugh with her through her life with all its joys and triumphs and sorrows. Her strength and righteousness shine like a beacon and one cannot help but feel some anxiety when her son roughly throws her out of his house, and sigh with relief as she overcomes this heartbreak and indignity to emerge safe and find her way home.
Every brahmin family has a Sivakami of their own and Im sure this book will succeed in paying homage and respects to the strength of these sheltered yet intelligent women who were raised steeped in traditions and customs but have survived trials and tribulations by the convictions of their righteousness and faith in their moral values.
I gladly recommend this book, the writing style is descriptive yet light and interesting. It would make a wonderful book club selection too.
